Laura organised an unbelievable trip to Borneo for us that took in all of the wildlife, a few days at a luxury hotel on the beach and a couple of days in Kuala Lumpur. I was apprehensive as we were travelling with a five-year-old and we'd never been on this kind of holiday before, but I needn't have been. Laura tailored our trip to be adventurous and to see all of the sights, while still being child-friendly and at a pace we could all enjoy. The hotels and lodges were fantastic, and every flight, transfer and boat was organised to perfection. All we had to do was sit back and enjoy it. Genuinely a holiday of a lifetime.

Tour itinerary

Days 1 - 3:

Dive into the rainforest – starting at the Discovery Centre

Fly overnight from London to Sandakan (via Kuala Lumpur).

Upon arrival on day 2, you will be met and transferred to MY Nature Resort for 2 nights on a half-board basis. Set on the edge of tropical rainforest, the traditional chalets have large terraces overlooking the jungle and a 300-metre canopy walkway.

Day 3 will be a free day to spend at leisure exploring boardwalks, visiting the Rainforest Discovery Centre or heading to the Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. You could also join an optional night walk to spot nocturnal wildlife.

Days 4 - 6:

Meet sun bears and orang-utans then cruise the Kinabatangan River

On the morning of day 4 you will visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and Sun Bear Conservation Centre before cruising the mighty Kinabatangan River to Abai Jungle Lodge where you will stay for 1 night on a full-board basis. Enjoy an afternoon river safari and an evening jungle walk later.

Continue by boat along the river on day 5, heading to Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge for 2 nights with all meals included. You will spend the next 2 days taking dawn and dusk cruises and visiting Abai Village to learn about local community projects while searching for pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys and rare birdlife.

Days 7 - 12:

From the wild jungle to the pristine beaches of Gaya Island

This morning you will be taken to Sandakan airport, where will then catch your flight to Kota Kinabalu. On arrival you will be met and transferred by car and speedboat to the luxurious Gaya Island Resort for 5 nights with breakfast included. Nestled in a protected marine park with golden beaches and ancient rainforest, the resort offers complimentary guided nature walks. Snorkelling expeditions and mangrove kayak tours are also available (paid locally).

Spend the next 4 full days relaxing on the beach, enjoying water sports or exploring coral reefs and rainforest trails.

Transfer back to Kota Kinabalu airport on day 12 for your return flight to the UK, arriving the next day.
