Sunrise Balloon Safari over the Serengeti
A hot air balloon safari in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park is one of the most memorable experiences you can add to your time on safari. Rising above the plains at first light, it offers a rare sense of space, exclusivity and occasion that feels distinctly different from a traditional game drive. For many travellers, it becomes the defining highlight of their Tanzania safari holiday.

An early start that's worth every minute
Your morning usually begins around 4am with a drive from your safari lodge to the launch site while the Serengeti is still under the cover of darkness. It may sound like an early alarm, but you’ll soon understand why. Watching the balloon slowly inflate under the glow of the burners before climbing aboard builds an excitement that’s difficult to describe until you’ve experienced it yourself. By the time the basket gently lifts off, the first light is spreading across the plains and the Serengeti is beginning to wake.
A safari from above
The flight lasts around an hour and can climb to approximately 2,000 feet (610 metres), although your pilot constantly changes altitude to make the most of the scenery and wildlife below. At times you’ll drift just above the treetops before climbing higher to appreciate the vast scale of the ecosystem. Depending on the season and where you’re flying, you may see elephants making their way between feeding areas, giraffes browsing among acacia trees, or herds of wildebeest and zebra crossing the plains. Every flight follows the wind, so no two mornings are ever exactly the same.
More than just a balloon flight
From leaving your lodge to returning to your safari guide, the whole experience lasts around five hours. After landing, you’ll celebrate with the traditional champagne toast before enjoying a gourmet bush breakfast in the heart of the Serengeti. The experience doesn’t finish there either. The drive back becomes another game drive, often adding more wildlife sightings before you continue with the rest of your morning safari. It’s one of the reasons we think a balloon safari offers much more than simply an hour in the air.
Taking Children on a Balloon Safari
A balloon safari can be a fantastic addition to family holidays in Tanzania, provided children meet the minimum age requirements. Most operators welcome children aged seven and over, although younger children may sometimes be accepted depending on their height and ability to understand the safety briefing.
If younger children aren’t able to fly, some operators can arrange for them to travel to the launch site before following the balloon by vehicle. They’ll then rejoin the rest of the family for the champagne breakfast after landing, allowing everyone to share the experience together.
Flying Comfortably and Safely
Hot air balloon safaris have an excellent safety record and only operate when weather conditions are suitable. Flights take place before sunrise when the air is at its calmest and are led by highly experienced commercial balloon pilots. Although you’ll climb to around 2,000 feet (610 metres), take-off and landing are both far gentler than most first-time flyers expect.
Mornings can feel surprisingly cool, even in Tanzania, so dressing in layers is the best approach. A lightweight jacket or fleece can easily be removed once the sun is higher, while comfortable closed shoes are recommended for take-off and landing. A hat is also worth bringing, as the heat from the burners can be noticeable overhead, along with your camera and binoculars to make the most of the views.
Planning Your Balloon Safari
A hot air balloon safari is one of the Serengeti’s most sought-after experiences, with places often booking up months in advance, particularly during the Great Migration. As flights operate from different regions of the Serengeti throughout the year, choosing the right location and timing can make all the difference.
