The Great Migration isn’t a single event, but a year-round cycle of movement across the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem, shaped by the rains and the search for fresh grazing. The herds typically begin in the southern Serengeti in January, calving on the open Ndutu plains before slowly heading northwest toward the Grumeti River by May and June. As the dry season sets in, the wildebeest press further north, reaching the Mara River from July, where the most dramatic crossings take place. By late October, they begin drifting south once more, scattered across the central Serengeti as they follow the first signs of rain. It’s a constant, shifting loop—more than a million animals in near-continuous motion, shadowed by predators every step of the way. Calving Season’s Miracle
While the river crossings steal the spotlight, calving season in the southern Serengeti offers a quieter but no less remarkable side of the migration. From late January to early March, more than 400,000 wildebeest are born on the open Ndutu plains, with around 8,000 arriving each day at the February peak. Newborns stand within minutes and sprint within hours—nature equipping them for survival as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas lurk in the short-grass plains, drawn by the density of vulnerable young. The drama is constant and often up close. It’s a raw, intimate glimpse into survival, and a powerful highlight of any safari during the green season.
Experiencing the Crossing
The anticipation is electric as thousands of wildebeest gather nervously at the riverbank in Kenya’s Masai Mara, typically from July to early October. Every season, guests watch the herd swell by the hour, their anxious grunts filling the dry, dust-hung air. Then, out of nowhere, one brave wildebeest plunges in — and chaos erupts! The river explodes with thundering hooves, splashes, and desperate scrambles as the herd battles the crocodile-infested waters. It’s heart-stopping, wild, and utterly unforgettable. Sometimes the crossing lasts minutes, sometimes hours—wave after wave crashing through under cloudless skies as predators strike from both land and water. The light shifts, dust swirls, and the air fills with urgency. For many, it’s the defining moment of an African safari. Yet even between the crossings, the drama continues: lion prides waiting in the grass, vultures circling above, and herds amassing on the far bank, preparing to cross again.
When To Visit For The Great Migration
The ideal window to witness the Great Migration stretches from June through October, when the herds surge north through Tanzania’s Serengeti and stage the iconic Mara River crossings in Kenya. In June, you’ll find the herds splintering and crossing the Grumeti River—a quieter but equally tension-charged spectacle. Then, through July into early September, the dramatic crossings over the crocodile-infested Mara River unfold under wide-open skies, as predators lurk and wildebeest bravery is tested. Later in September and early October, herds graze peacefully in the Masai Mara, still powerful in scale but with a quieter rhythm, as they prepare to return south with the first rains.
