Sunrise Over the Ngorongoro Crater

The pre-dawn chill carries hints of wood smoke from nearby Maasai villages as you take position at a prime viewpoint. Below, the crater floor slowly emerges from the darkness, first as a silver mirror of lakes and streams, then painted in progressive waves of gold as the sun crests the eastern rim.

Within this perfect natural bowl, 600 metres deep and spanning 300 square kilometres, life begins its daily dance. Hippos lumber back to their pools after night-time grazing, while zebra and wildebeest herds drift like living clouds across the grasslands. Pink brushstrokes of flamingos edge the soda lakes, and if you’re lucky, you might spot one of the crater’s rare black rhinos emerging from the early morning mist.
