June to October: Tanzania's Dry Season

For many travellers, June to October is the most rewarding time to visit Tanzania. Days are generally warm and sunny, rainfall is limited, and wildlife becomes easier to spot as vegetation thins and animals gather around permanent water sources.

This is the peak safari season across much of the country. The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara all offer excellent game viewing, while southern parks such as Ruaha and Nyerere National Park are often at their best. Large elephant herds are frequently seen in Tarangire, predators are easier to locate in the Serengeti, and the dry conditions make game drives more comfortable.

The period from July to September is particularly sought after because it coincides with some of the most dramatic stages of the Great Migration. During these months, herds move through the northern Serengeti, where river crossings can take place as wildebeest and zebra navigate crocodile-filled waters in search of fresh grazing.

The dry season is also one of the best times to combine a safari with Zanzibar. Humidity is lower, the sea is calmer and conditions are excellent for snorkelling, diving and relaxing on the beach. Not surprisingly, this is also a popular period for family holidays in Tanzania, particularly during the summer school holidays.

The main drawback is that this is Tanzania’s busiest season. Popular safari lodges and camps often book up many months in advance, and prices tend to be higher than at other times of year.

November to December: The Short Rains

November and December mark Tanzania’s short rainy season. While the word “rainy” can put some people off, the reality is often very different from what many expect. Showers are typically short and localised, often arriving in the afternoon or evening, with plenty of sunshine in between.

The landscape begins to transform after months of dry weather. Dust settles, grass starts to return and the countryside takes on a greener appearance. For photographers, this can be a particularly rewarding time to travel, with dramatic skies and softer light creating a very different atmosphere from the dry season.

Wildlife viewing remains good in many areas, particularly in the northern parks, while visitor numbers are noticeably lower than during the peak months. This can make for a more relaxed safari experience, with fewer vehicles at sightings and better availability at many properties.

November also marks the start of the migratory bird season, making it an excellent time for birdwatchers. Species arriving from Europe and Asia add colour and variety to Tanzania’s already impressive birdlife.

If you are combining safari with Zanzibar, you can still enjoy warm temperatures, although occasional rain showers become more likely as the season progresses.

January to March: Calving Season and Green Landscapes

For many safari enthusiasts, January and February are among the most rewarding months to visit Tanzania.

The southern Serengeti becomes the focus of attention as hundreds of thousands of wildebeest gather on the nutrient-rich short-grass plains to give birth. During a relatively short period, thousands of calves are born every day, creating one of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles in Africa.

With so many vulnerable young animals on the plains, predators are never far away. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas and jackals are often active, resulting in exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities.

Unlike the dry season, the scenery is lush and green. The contrast between the open plains, dramatic skies and large herds creates a very different safari experience to that found later in the year.

Temperatures are generally warm, particularly in lower-lying areas and along the coast. Zanzibar enjoys plenty of sunshine during this period, making it a popular addition to a safari itinerary. For couples considering a Tanzania honeymoon, the combination of excellent wildlife viewing and beach time can work particularly well at this time of year.

January to March is also one of the preferred periods for climbing Kilimanjaro, thanks to generally dry conditions and good visibility.

March to May: Tanzania's Green Season

March to May brings Tanzania’s long rains and is often considered the country’s low season. While this period is not suitable for everyone, it should not automatically be dismissed.

Weather patterns vary from year to year, but heavier rainfall can make some roads more challenging, particularly in remote areas, and a number of seasonal camps close for part of the season.

However, there are advantages to travelling during these months. Landscapes are at their greenest, visitor numbers are at their lowest and many properties offer attractive rates. Parks feel quieter and more exclusive, while photographers often appreciate the dramatic cloud formations and vibrant scenery.

Birdlife is particularly impressive during this period, with breeding plumage adding colour throughout the country.

You should simply be realistic about expectations. Rain can affect game drives and some areas are less accessible than during the dry season, but for those looking to experience a different side of Tanzania, the green season can be surprisingly rewarding.

Following the Great Migration

The Great Migration is one of the main reasons people visit Tanzania, but there is no single month when it is “at its best”. What you’ll see depends entirely on where the herds are in their annual cycle.

From January to March, the herds are usually found on the southern Serengeti plains. This coincides with the calving season, when thousands of wildebeest calves are born within a relatively short period. The landscape is green following seasonal rains, and the abundance of young animals attracts predators such as lions, cheetahs and hyenas. Many safari enthusiasts consider this one of the most rewarding times to visit Tanzania.

As the year progresses and the plains begin to dry, the herds gradually move west and north through the Serengeti. By July and August, attention shifts to the northern Serengeti, where the migration is often associated with dramatic river crossings. Exact timings vary from year to year and are influenced by rainfall, but this period generally offers excellent wildlife viewing and pleasant dry-season weather.

By October and November, the herds begin moving south once again as rains return to parts of the Serengeti, eventually making their way back towards the southern plains to start the cycle all over again.

While the river crossings receive much of the attention, they are only one chapter of a year-round journey. Whether you’re drawn to the vast herds spread across the southern plains, predator action during calving season or the excitement of the northern Serengeti, Tanzania offers opportunities to experience the migration throughout much of the year.

When to Visit Zanzibar

Many Tanzania itineraries include time on Zanzibar, whether as a few days of relaxation after a safari or as part of a longer beach holiday.

The island can be visited throughout most of the year, although some periods are more favourable than others.

June to October is generally considered the best time to visit Zanzibar. Days are warm and sunny, humidity is lower and conditions are ideal for swimming, snorkelling and diving. These months also pair perfectly with Tanzania’s dry safari season.

January and February are another excellent time to visit. The weather is typically warm and settled, making it a popular choice for travellers combining the island with the Serengeti’s calving season.

The long rains between March and May can bring heavier rainfall to the coast, while November and December experience shorter, less predictable showers. Despite this, Zanzibar remains attractive throughout much of the year and rainfall rarely prevents travellers from enjoying the island entirely.
