We were keen to see as many species of bird as possible and the guides were expecting this and each had amazing knowledge of where to find them. Not just that, but they made sure we also got to see many of the rest of the wildlife of the region - everything from amazing numbers of Impala, Giraffe, Elephant, Zebra, lions, Cheetah and Leopard, and even Wild Dog that we had hoped to see but doubted we would be so lucky!

We had an amazing time. Everything was brilliant (even the baboon leaving a gift on the bed in the Serengeti!). I think Nick’s highlight was the lion cubs. I loved all the safari, but seeing the turtles hatch in Pangani was truly awesome. All the accommodation was exactly what we had hoped for. I hadn’t realised we would have a tent on our first night as well.

Tour itinerary

Days 1 - 3:

London to Ngorongoro Crater

Fly overnight from the UK to Kilimanjaro (via Nairobi).

Upon arrival on day 2, you’ll be met by your private driver/guide and 4×4 vehicle where you will then proceed to head straight out for a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park — home to elephants, giraffes, and (with luck) tree-climbing lions. You will then continue to the crater rim for 2 nights on a full-board basis at Ang’ata Ngorongoro Camp, a peaceful tented camp tucked into an acacia forest.

Wake early on day 3 for a full-day game drive on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, a UNESCO-listed caldera teeming with wildlife. With black rhino, large lion prides, and one of the highest densities of animals in Africa, this is safari at its most spectacular. After an incredible day you will return to camp for a well-earned Sundowner.

Days 4 - 6:

Into the Serengeti – Migration time!

On day 4, you will head to central Serengeti where you will spend 1 night at Nyikani Camp Central.

The following day you will head onto the plains of the Serengeti, where you will have game-driving en route, and continue on to Mara Under Canvas, a seasonal camp in the park’s far north. Perfectly positioned for the Great Migration. You will stay here for 2 nights on a full-board basis.

You will now have a full day with your guide and private vehicle, exploring this extraordinary ecosystem, from big cat sightings to wildebeest crossings at the Mara River. You could even go on a hot air balloon ride to take in the wildlife sightings from the air!

Days 7 - 13:

Barefoot bliss on Mafia Island and homeward bound

Leave the savannah behind after a morning game drive and breakfast, as you fly by light aircraft to Mafia Island, a quiet paradise off the Tanzanian coast. On arrival, you will be met and transferred for 6 nights on a half-board basis at Butiama Beach, a friendly, owner-run lodge set beside palm-fringed sand and turquoise waters.

The next 5 days are yours to fill as you please: snorkel vibrant coral reefs, kayak along the coast, join a dhow cruise, or simply swing in a hammock with a cool drink in hand. The diving is superb and you could even take part in some yoga if you fancy!

After a final morning swim on day 13, you will transfer to Mafia Airport for your flight to Dar es Salaam. On arrival, you will connect with your international flight back to the UK.
