Built in classic safari style beneath canvas, they combine natural materials, simple furnishings and open views that keep the focus firmly on the setting outside. Large mesh windows and private verandas allow plenty of light and airflow throughout the day, while the camp’s relatively small size helps maintain a quieter and more intimate atmosphere around the tents themselves. Ensuite bathrooms and thoughtful practical touches provide comfort after long hours out on game drives, but the overall feel remains understated and in keeping with the remote wilderness setting.

Food

Dining at Mara River Post follows the flexible pace of safari life, particularly during migration season when wildlife activity often shapes the rhythm of the day. Meals are served in the open-sided dining area, where views across the surrounding bush remain part of the atmosphere from morning through to evening. The style of food is fresh, varied and relaxed rather than overly formal, with bush breakfasts and picnic lunches often accompanying longer game drives out near the Mara River. Back at camp, evenings slow down around the fire with drinks, dinner and conversations reflecting on the day’s sightings, creating a sociable yet unhurried feel between activities.

Activities

Game drives are the focus at Mara River Post, particularly during the migration months when wildebeest and zebra gather near the Mara River crossing points. Days often revolve around tracking herd movements, waiting patiently near the riverbanks and following predator activity across the surrounding plains. The atmosphere during crossings can shift quickly from complete stillness to intense movement, creating some of the Serengeti’s most memorable wildlife moments.

Outside of the migration itself, the northern Serengeti still offers strong resident wildlife viewing, including elephant, giraffe, lion and plains game across quieter safari circuits. Time back at camp is intentionally slower and more grounded after long hours spent out in the bush.

We were keen to see as many species of bird as possible and the guides were expecting this and each had amazing knowledge of where to find them. Not just that, but they made sure we also got to see many of the rest of the wildlife of the region - everything from amazing numbers of Impala, Giraffe, Elephant, Zebra, lions, Cheetah and Leopard, and even Wild Dog that we had hoped to see but doubted we would be so lucky!

I loved all the safari, but seeing the turtles hatch in Pangani was truly awesome. All the accommodation was exactly what we had hoped for.
