When Is the Best Time to Visit South Africa?

With its mix of wildlife, cities, mountains and coastline, South Africa is a year-round destination. However, the best time to visit depends on what you want to see and do. The country’s climate varies considerably between regions, so the ideal months for a safari can be quite different from those for exploring Cape Town or driving the Garden Route.

For wildlife, the cooler, drier months from May to September are particularly popular, when vegetation is thinner and animals are easier to spot around water sources. In the Western Cape, meanwhile, the warmer, drier months from October to March are generally the most settled for exploring Cape Town, the Winelands and the surrounding coastline.

The good news is that there’s no single wrong time to visit South Africa. With the right route, you can enjoy a fantastic holiday at almost any time of the year.

May to September

The best time for safari

If safari is high on your list of reasons to visit South Africa, then May to September is a great time to go. In Kruger National Park, this is the dry season, so vegetation becomes thinner and wildlife tends to gather around rivers and waterholes. This can make animals easier to spot on game drives, while the cooler temperatures are generally more comfortable for spending time in the bush.

Early mornings and evenings can be chilly, so warm layers are useful for game drives. By contrast, the Western Cape, including Cape Town and the Winelands, is cooler and wetter during these months, although rain doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll lose a day of exploring.

September can be a useful month for combining safari with Cape Town and the Winelands, as temperatures begin to rise in the Cape, while the dry season is still underway in the north.

Looking for a flexible way to explore? South Africa Self-Drive holidays give you the freedom to discover the country at your own pace. Take your time, stop wherever takes your fancy and enjoy the open road.

October to March

Warmer weather and greener landscapes

October to March brings warmer conditions across much of South Africa, although the weather does vary from one region to another. In the Western Cape, these are the warmer, drier months, with plenty of sunshine and good conditions for exploring Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route.

Further north and east, summer brings more rainfall. The bush becomes greener and more vibrant, although thicker vegetation can make wildlife to spot on Kruger safaris, or safaris elsewhere.

December to February are the height of summer, with hotter conditions and occasional afternoon showers in many safari regions. By March, temperatures begin to ease.

South Africa is a versatile choice for families, with safari, beaches, cities and outdoor adventures all possible within one holiday. Take a look at our Family Holidays in South Africa for a good place to start if this is a potential destination for your next family holiday.

Best Time to Visit Kruger National Park

If a safari is the highlight of your South Africa holiday, May to September is generally considered the prime time for visiting Kruger National Park. The dry conditions mean less vegetation and more concentrated wildlife around permanent water sources, which can make game viewing especially rewarding. The cooler weather also makes early morning and late afternoon game drives more comfortable, but pack layers.

If you want to go somewhere quieter for your safari, other destinations in South Africa include Sabi Sands and Madikwe Game Reserve.

Best Time to Visit Cape Town and the Winelands

The Western Cape has a very different climate from Kruger. Summers are warm and dry, while winters are cooler and wetter, with June to August seeing the most rainfall.

October to March is a popular time to visit Cape Town and the Winelands, particularly if you want to make the most of the coast and outdoor activities. The shoulder seasons of April to May and September to October can offer milder temperatures and fewer visitors.

Winter can still be a good time to explore the region if you don’t mind more changeable weather. Rainy days are possible, but there can also be clear spells, and the cooler conditions can suit sightseeing and wine experiences.

Best Time to Visit the Garden Route

Thanks to its mild, temperate climate, Garden Route holidays can be enjoyed throughout the year. Rainfall is spread across the seasons rather than being concentrated into one distinct wet period, so there isn’t a particular season that you need to avoid.

Summer is a popular time for making the most of the coastline, beaches and outdoor activities, while spring and autumn can be a nice time for a road trip. Winter is cooler, but the region remains a good option for exploring its forests, coastline and towns.
