The Garden Route
Mossel Bay
Mossel Bay marks the western gateway to South Africa’s Garden Route and offers an ideal mix of coastal leisure and outdoor adventure. This historic seaside town features long sandy beaches, a lively harbourfront, and plenty of attractions. You can explore the Diaz Museum Complex, visit the Point of Human Origins archaeological site, or head out on the water for whale watching or shark cage diving. Wilderness

Best Time to Visit the Garden Route
The best time to visit the Garden Route is during the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May), when the weather is mild, the landscapes are lush, and the roads are quieter. Spring brings wildflowers to the coastal fynbos and the chance to spot southern right whales off the coast near Hermanus. In autumn, the days are warm and golden, ideal for hiking in Tsitsikamma, canoeing along the Wilderness waterways, or exploring the art galleries and craft studios tucked into Plett’s streets without the summer crowds. While December to February offers peak sunshine for beachgoers, it’s also school holiday season and you might expect busy beaches and booked-up stays.
