January and February

January and February are excellent months for exploring southern Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc enjoy warm temperatures of around 25°C to 32°C, low rainfall and plenty of sunshine, making them ideal for winter sun holidays.

Northern Vietnam is cooler at this time of year, with temperatures in Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh typically ranging from 15°C to 22°C. Sapa and the northern mountains can feel particularly chilly, especially in the evenings, but the cooler weather is often pleasant for sightseeing and cultural touring.

March and April

March and April are often considered the best months to visit Vietnam.

Temperatures in northern Vietnam generally range from 20°C to 28°C, creating comfortable conditions for exploring Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh. Central Vietnam, including Hoi An, Hue and Da Nang, enjoys warm, sunny weather, while southern Vietnam remains hot and dry.

If you are hoping to experience several regions in one itinerary, these months usually offer the most reliable weather across the country.

May and June

As temperatures rise across Vietnam, May and June bring increasingly warm weather. Southern Vietnam enters its green season, with temperatures regularly reaching the low 30s and short afternoon showers becoming more common.

Central Vietnam enjoys some of its best conditions of the year. Hoi An, Da Nang, Quy Nhon and Nha Trang benefit from long sunny days, warm seas and temperatures of around 28°C to 35°C, making this an excellent time for beach holidays.

These months can also offer good value before the peak summer holiday season begins.

July and August

July and August are among the most popular months for family holidays in Vietnam.

Central Vietnam continues to enjoy excellent beach weather, while destinations such as Hoi An and Da Nang offer a good balance of culture, coastline and family-friendly accommodation. Temperatures generally range from 28°C to 35°C.

However, this is also one of the hottest times of year. Northern Vietnam, including Hanoi and Sapa, can feel hot and humid, while southern Vietnam experiences regular tropical showers. These are usually short-lived but can occasionally affect outdoor activities and sightseeing.

For families travelling during the school holidays, central Vietnam is often the safest choice.

September and October

September and October are some of the most rewarding months to visit northern Vietnam.

Temperatures become more comfortable after the summer heat, typically ranging from 22°C to 30°C. Rice terraces around Sapa, Mu Cang Chai and Ha Giang turn shades of gold before harvest, creating some of the country’s most spectacular scenery.

The main drawback is central Vietnam’s rainy season. Hoi An, Hue and parts of the central coast can experience prolonged rainfall, rough seas and occasional flooding, particularly during October.

November and December

November and December mark the return of drier weather across southern Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc enjoy warm temperatures of around 25°C to 32°C and plenty of sunshine, making them ideal for winter escapes.

Conditions are also generally pleasant in Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh, where cooler temperatures make sightseeing comfortable. However, northern Vietnam can feel noticeably cooler than many travellers expect, particularly in the evenings and in the mountain regions.

This period offers one of the best balances of culture, beaches and outdoor activities across Vietnam.

Vietnam for Families

Vietnam with kids works particularly well during the Easter and summer school holidays.

Easter is often one of the easiest times to travel, with favourable weather across much of the country. It works particularly well for families looking to combine Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City in a single trip.

The summer holidays are also a good option, though it is worth knowing that weather varies by region during this period. Central Vietnam enjoys some of its best weather of the year and is an excellent choice for families wanting beaches alongside culture. The north can be hot and humid in July and August with occasional heavy showers, so if your itinerary includes Hanoi or Sapa, factor that in when planning. Southern Vietnam remains warm but can see short tropical showers during these months.

Families travelling during Christmas and New Year should book early, as it is one of the busiest periods of the year and availability at boutique hotels in Vietnam can become limited.

Vietnam for Beaches

If your priority is sunshine and beach time, timing becomes more important.

For Hoi An, Da Nang, Quy Nhon and Nha Trang, the best conditions are generally found between February and August. During these months, temperatures are warm, rainfall is lower and the sea is usually calm.

For Phu Quoc and southern Vietnam, December to April is often the best period, particularly for travellers looking to escape the British winter.

Vietnam for Winter Sun

Vietnam is an excellent winter sun destination, particularly between December and April.

During these months, southern Vietnam enjoys warm temperatures, low rainfall and plenty of sunshine. Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc are all at their best, making them ideal for travellers looking to escape the British winter.

If you want to explore more of the country, this period also offers comfortable sightseeing conditions in Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay, although temperatures in the north are noticeably cooler than in the south. Central Vietnam is generally becoming drier too, making it a good time to combine cultural highlights such as Hoi An and Hue with a beach stay or a few relaxing days in Phu Quoc.

The Best Time for Trekking

The mountain regions of northern Vietnam are at their best during spring and autumn.

March to May brings comfortable temperatures and green landscapes, while September to October offers clearer skies and some of the country’s most impressive scenery as rice terraces turn golden before harvest.

This time is ideal for exploring Sapa, Ha Giang and other remote regions of northern Vietnam. Ninh Binh is also particularly enjoyable during spring and autumn, when temperatures are comfortable for cycling, walking and exploring the surrounding countryside.

Travelling During Tet

Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, usually falls between late January and mid-February and is the country’s most important annual celebration.

For travellers, Tet offers a fascinating insight into Vietnamese culture. Streets are decorated, flower markets appear across cities and families gather to celebrate together.

However, it is also one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Domestic flights, trains and hotels often book up well in advance, and some restaurants and attractions may operate reduced hours. For first-time visitors, we usually recommend travelling either before or after the holiday period.
