Vietnam's Imperial Capital

Hue offers a very different experience to Hoi An. While Hoi An is colourful and lively, Hue feels quieter and more authentic, with broad tree-lined streets, riverside parks and reminders of Vietnam’s imperial past around almost every corner. As the country’s capital during the Nguyen Dynasty, it remains one of the best places to see in Vietnam for anyone interested in history, architecture and culture.

The vast Imperial City sits at the heart of Hue, surrounded by ancient walls, palaces and temples that once housed Vietnam’s emperors. Beyond the citadel, royal tombs, pagodas and the Perfume River tell the story of a city that shaped Vietnam for more than a century. Exploring by bicycle or cyclo is a wonderful way to discover both the historic centre and the peaceful countryside that surrounds it.

Food is another reason Hue deserves more than a quick visit. As the former royal capital, many of Vietnam’s finest dishes were created here for the imperial court. Today, small family-run restaurants and busy street food stalls continue those traditions, serving local specialities that are difficult to find elsewhere in the country.

Although the Imperial City is the main attraction, Hue rewards anyone willing to explore beyond it. Boat trips along the Perfume River, visits to the royal tombs and quiet roads leading through villages and rice fields all reveal a slower, more traditional side of Vietnam. Together with Hoi An, Hue creates a natural contrast, balancing lively evenings and beaches with history, culture and local life.

Hoi An and Hue are often among the easiest stops on a Vietnam itinerary with children. Both are easy to explore, distances are short and there’s enough variety to keep each day interesting without feeling overplanned.

Hoi An is particularly family friendly because much of the Ancient Town is pedestrianised. Children can wander safely between lantern-lined streets, markets and cafés without the constant traffic found in many of Vietnam’s larger cities. Beyond the Old Town, cycling through rice paddies, joining a cooking class or spending an afternoon at An Bang Beach creates a good balance between sightseeing and time to play.

Hue offers a different experience. The Imperial City feels more like a fortress waiting to be explored than a museum, while dragon boat trips along the Perfume River and visits to the royal tombs add adventure to the city’s history. It’s an easy way to introduce Vietnam’s past without every visit revolving around temples.

Many boutique hotels in Vietnam around Hoi An and Hue also work well for families, often offering spacious gardens, family rooms and swimming pools.
