"I’ve canoed the Lower Zambezi, wild camped in the Okavango Delta, and driven from the UK to Cape Town. I love getting under the skin of a place and its landscapes, wildlife, and culture."

The day begins in the quiet dark, long before the sun crests the horizon.

You’ll set off towards Dune 45, a towering 85-meter sand dune nestled in the heart of the Namib Desert. Named for its position 45 kilometres from the Sesriem gate, it’s one of the most accessible and photogenic dunes in the Sossusvlei area.

Climbing Dune 45 is no easy feat. The sand gives way beneath your feet with each step, making progress slow but deeply rewarding. As you ascend, the desert begins to shift—from cool indigo shadows to warm, golden tones. Every few minutes, the view changes, revealing the vast, undulating sea of sand that stretches out endlessly around you.

Reaching the summit just as the sun rises is a moment that stays with you. The sharp line between shadow and sun cuts across the dunes, painting them in rich ochres and deep purples. The silence of the desert, combined with the immensity of the landscape, evokes a sense of awe and timelessness. It’s a photographer’s dream, but also a moment for personal reflection.

After your descent, your journey continues through the iconic Sossusvlei and Deadvlei—home to scorched white pans and ancient camelthorn trees. With our expertly tailored trips, we’ll help you explore these incredible formations while also introducing you to the lesser-known parts of the Namib, from hidden canyons to stargazing under some of the world’s clearest skies.
