Dating back to 400BC, the sacred city of Anuradhapura is the first capital city, the most important religious site in the country and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Featuring an impressive collection of palaces, monasteries and 3 giant stupas the site is also home to a sacred Bo Tree, grown from the original tree under which the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment. Further south is the second capital and equally impressive ancient city of Polonnaruwa which includes an incredible 12^th century rock sculpture of four giant Buddha statues.

In the heart of the Cultural Triangle sits the Dambulla Cave Temples, a complex of 5 main caves which houses incredible Buddhist rock frescoes and over 150 Buddha statues. It is believed there are another 80 caves in the area! Surrounded by jungle, only a few kilometres from Dambulla, lies another ancient capital and the country’s most iconic attraction, the rock fortress of Sigiriya (Lion Mountain). A climb to the top for the breath-taking views is not to be missed!

Some of lesser known highlights include the forest monastery of Ritigala, the rock temple of Pidurangala and the magnificent Buddha rock sculpture of Aukana .
