Snorkelling with Whale Sharks in Madagascar

As your boat cuts through the crystal-clear waters off Madagascar's coast, anticipation builds.

Swimming with a whale shark is one of Madagascar’s most memorable marine experiences. Despite their enormous size, these gentle sharks are filter feeders, moving slowly through the water as they feed on plankton and small fish close to the surface.

The waters around Nosy Be are Madagascar’s main destination for snorkelling with whale sharks. Between September and December, whale sharks gather in the area to feed, with October and November usually offering some of the most reliable opportunities for encounters.

Head out by boat with an experienced crew, who will look for signs of feeding activity at the surface. Once a whale shark is located, you’ll slip into the water with a mask and snorkel and wait for it to approach.

Seeing a whale shark underwater gives you a real sense of just how enormous they are. Their broad heads, distinctive spotted markings and powerful tails are unmistakable as they glide through the water, often feeding close to the surface. You may be able to swim alongside one for a short time, always keeping a respectful distance and allowing the whale shark to dictate the encounter.

Encounters are always on the whale shark’s terms, and responsible operators limit disturbance, avoid touching or chasing the sharks and control how swimmers enter the water.

There’s plenty more to look for while you’re out at sea. The waters around Nosy Be and its neighbouring islands are also excellent for snorkelling, with turtles, rays and colourful reef fish adding another dimension to your time on the coast.
