DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: UK to Colombo
Fly overnight from the UK to Colombo.

Day 2: Colombo
On arrival you will be met by your driver/guide and transferred in your private vehicle to the Talangama wetlands on the outskirts of Colombo to spend 2 nights on an exclusive basis at the Villa Talangama, a beautiful 3 bedroom Sri Lankan house offering some of the best hospitality in the country and a perfect relaxing start to your family adventure.

Days 3: Colombo
This morning you will explore Colombo with your guide. There is plenty to see in the city with Buddhist temples, national galleries, museums, colonial architecture and a buzzing food scene. We highly recommend a walking tour of the Fort to soak up the fascinating architecture and bustling Pettah Market. You will then return to your villa for a relaxing lunch and afternoon by the pool.  Remember, this is just a starting point idea to give you a flavour of what we can do. All our family holidays are uniquely designed for each family. Contact us on 01273 923100 to start designing yours.

Day 4: Colombo to Kandy
Full refreshed and ready to go, you will head to the city of Kandy to spend 2 nights in the family suite at The Secret Kandy, a former governor’s residence and now a beautiful 5 room boutique guesthouse offering first class service and delicious food.

Day 5: Kandy
Today you will enjoy a guided tour of Kandy, starting with the UNESCO Temple of the Tooth and Royal Palace, followed by a walk around Kandy Lake. You will then continue to the Kandy Royal Botanical Gardens which contains over 4000 species of plant and lots of giant fruit bats hanging from the trees!

Day 6: Kandy to Cultural Triangle
This morning you will drive north into the Cultural Triangle, heading to the incredible Dambulla Cave Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest temple cave complex in Sri Lanka.

You will then head for 3 nights at Jim’s Farm Villa, an independently owned eco-retreat on a large coconut and spice plantation that offers beautiful surroundings, friendly service and a great selection of activities – we particularly love the cooking classes with the farm chef and cycling to the nearby local temples.

Day 7: Cultural Triangle
This morning you will head to the ancient kingdom of Polonnaruwa to enjoy a guided cycling tour. This UNESCO World Heritage site was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993 and contains some incredible well-preserved stupas, temples and Buddha statues.

This afternoon you will return to Jim’s Farm Villa for a swim and relaxing afternoon. For a bit of fun you may want to the take the farm’s tuk-tuk for a spin around the farm!

Day 8: Cultural Triangle
This morning you will be collected by your guide and driven to the iconic Rock Fortress of Sigiriya to enjoy a guided tour of this fascinating UNESCO complex and a hike to the top to enjoy the stunning scenery. You will then return to Jim’s Farm Villa to relax.  Want to stay an extra day or two in the Cultural Triangle & see Anuradhapura? Contact us on 01273 923100 to design a family holiday tailored to you or to get more ideas.

Day 9: Cultural Triangle to Kalpitiya
Today you will head to Kalpitiya on the west coast for your final stop, spending 4 nights in a 2 bedroom family tent at Dolphin Beach, a rustic beach retreat which is super laid back, well managed, sits on a beautiful unspoilt stretch of beach and is far removed from some of the busier large resorts further south.

Day 10 to 12: Kalpitiya Beach
Three full days to relax and enjoy. Dan the manager is on hand to help with a variety of activities which include snorkelling, scuba, dolphin excursions, kite-surfing, sea kayaking, windsurfing and cycling. You also arrange a day of safari to Wilpattu National Park. Want to spend more days on the beach? Call us on 01273 923100 and let’s design a family holiday tailored to you and your budget.

Day 13: Colombo to UK
After a final dip in the Indian Ocean you will be transferred south to Colombo Airport for your flight back to the UK.

Sundowner raw footage

The latest word on the street about Sundowner’s Sri Lanka holidays:

We had 12 nights in Sri Lanka which we organised through Sundowner – it was excellent! Sundowner added real value with their recommendations on the travel and in particular their recommended accommodation. We were nervous about having our own local driver but in fact he was very good and it suited us as independent travellers who like to set our own agenda.

Chris Farrance Sri Lanka

Our trips all worked incredibly well – we were the first up Sigiriya in the morning – thus avoiding the heat, something you had recommended. We had a great train journey, saw a bear, leopard and about 20 elephants on the safari (definitely needed a whole day) in addition to visiting a large numbers of stupas, temples, a herbal centre, tea plantation, botanical garden etc.

Sarah Lyle Sri Lanka

Brilliant work creating our itinerary. Thoroughly enjoyable and varied. Super country and people. Would definitely return to Sri Lanka.

The Fox Family Sri Lanka

A gem of a country to visit with great charm and variety enhanced by a fantastic driver/guide. We loved every part of the trip for different reasons since the itinerary combined culture, history, wildlife and beach. Thank you for your recommendations and brilliant organisation.
