hike to the top of Sigiriya Rock, cycling around the ancient kingdom of Polonnaruwa, cooking Sri Lankan curries and dolphin watching off the unspoilt beaches of the west coast, this 12 night family adventure is packed with highlights, great activities and family friendly accommodation.
Day 1: UK to Colombo
Fly overnight from the UK to Colombo.
Day 2: Colombo
On arrival you will be met by your driver/guide and transferred in your private vehicle to the Talangama wetlands on the outskirts of Colombo to spend 2 nights on an exclusive basis at the Villa Talangama, a beautiful 3 bedroom Sri Lankan house offering some of the best hospitality in the country and a perfect relaxing start to your family adventure.
Days 3: Colombo
This morning you will explore Colombo with your guide. There is plenty to see in the city with Buddhist temples, national galleries, museums, colonial architecture and a buzzing food scene. We highly recommend a walking tour of the Fort to soak up the fascinating architecture and bustling Pettah Market. You will then return to your villa for a relaxing lunch and afternoon by the pool. Day 4: Colombo to Kandy
Full refreshed and ready to go, you will head to the city of Kandy to spend 2 nights in the family suite at The Secret Kandy, a former governor’s residence and now a beautiful 5 room boutique guesthouse offering first class service and delicious food.
Day 5: Kandy
Today you will enjoy a guided tour of Kandy, starting with the UNESCO Temple of the Tooth and Royal Palace, followed by a walk around Kandy Lake. You will then continue to the Kandy Royal Botanical Gardens which contains over 4000 species of plant and lots of giant fruit bats hanging from the trees!
Day 6: Kandy to Cultural Triangle
This morning you will drive north into the Cultural Triangle, heading to the incredible Dambulla Cave Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest temple cave complex in Sri Lanka.
You will then head for 3 nights at Jim’s Farm Villa, an independently owned eco-retreat on a large coconut and spice plantation that offers beautiful surroundings, friendly service and a great selection of activities – we particularly love the cooking classes with the farm chef and cycling to the nearby local temples.
Day 7: Cultural Triangle
This morning you will head to the ancient kingdom of Polonnaruwa to enjoy a guided cycling tour. This UNESCO World Heritage site was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993 and contains some incredible well-preserved stupas, temples and Buddha statues.
This afternoon you will return to Jim’s Farm Villa for a swim and relaxing afternoon. For a bit of fun you may want to the take the farm’s tuk-tuk for a spin around the farm!
Day 8: Cultural Triangle
This morning you will be collected by your guide and driven to the iconic Rock Fortress of Sigiriya to enjoy a guided tour of this fascinating UNESCO complex and a hike to the top to enjoy the stunning scenery. Day 9: Cultural Triangle to Kalpitiya
Today you will head to Kalpitiya on the west coast for your final stop, spending 4 nights in a 2 bedroom family tent at Dolphin Beach, a rustic beach retreat which is super laid back, well managed, sits on a beautiful unspoilt stretch of beach and is far removed from some of the busier large resorts further south.
Day 10 to 12: Kalpitiya Beach
Three full days to relax and enjoy. Dan the manager is on hand to help with a variety of activities which include snorkelling, scuba, dolphin excursions, kite-surfing, sea kayaking, windsurfing and cycling. Day 13: Colombo to UK
After a final dip in the Indian Ocean you will be transferred south to Colombo Airport for your flight back to the UK.
