South Coast: Mirissa, Unawatuna and Tangalle

Best from November to April

The south coast is the most popular stretch, combining easy access with the widest choice of boutique hotels and beachfront restaurants.

Mirissa is best known for whale watching between December and April, when early morning boats head offshore in search of blue whales. The crescent-shaped bay has a relaxed rhythm, with beach cafés filling up in the evenings. Swimming is possible in calmer pockets, though sea conditions can vary, and surfers often gather at the western end of the bay.

Just along the coast, Weligamma has a wide sandy bay and consistent waves in season, making it one of the easiest places in Sri Lanka to learn to surf. The seabed shelves gently and the open space gives it an active, laid back feel.

Unawatuna sits in a curved bay closer to Galle. In the right season, the water can be calmer here than on more exposed beaches. It’s compact and walkable, and combines easily with evenings exploring Galle Fort.

Further east, Tangalle feels quieter and more spacious. Long beaches stretch for miles, with smaller boutique properties set back from the sand. Some sections have stronger currents, so it’s less about long swims and more about scenery and slower days, which makes it a popular choice for a Sri Lanka honeymoon.

West Coast: Bentota, Negombo and Kalpitiya

Best from November to April

The west coast is the easiest to reach from Colombo, making it a convenient addition to a Sri Lanka holiday.

Bentota is around 90 minutes to two hours from the airport and is one of the most convenient beach bases. A long sweep of sand runs alongside the Indian Ocean, while the Bentota River sits just inland. The sea can be lively depending on conditions, but the lagoon side offers calmer water and a range of watersports including boat trips, paddleboarding and jet skiing. It feels more resort oriented than the south coast and works well for families who want convenience and activity in one place.

Negombo, just twenty minutes from the airport, is typically used for a first or final night rather than an extended beach stay. The beach provides a coastal setting, though swimming conditions can be unpredictable.

Further north, Kalpitiya is known for dolphin watching and seasonal kite surfing. It’s more about marine life and wind sports than relaxed swimming, and feels more niche and less developed than Bentota.
