When Is the Best Time to Visit Peru?
Peru can be visited throughout the year, but May to October is generally the best time to travel if you want to explore the Andes, visit Machu Picchu or go hiking. These are the drier months in the highlands, with clearer skies and more reliable conditions for outdoor activities.
The wetter season runs broadly from November to April, with the heaviest rainfall in the Andes usually falling between December and March. Travelling at this time can mean more changeable weather, but the mountains are greener, there are often fewer visitors and the Pacific coast is warmer and sunnier. In the Amazon, rain is possible throughout the year, with changing river levels offering different ways to experience the rainforest.
Peru’s climate varies across the country. The coastal region is generally mild and dry, while the Andes can be warm and sunny during the day but cold at night, and the Amazon remains hot and humid throughout the year. This means the best time to visit depends largely on which parts of the country you want to include in your holiday.

The Dry Season
May to October
May to October is the most popular time to visit Peru, particularly for holidays centred around the Andes. With less rain and generally clearer skies, it is a good period for exploring Machu Picchu & the Sacred Valley, hiking around Cusco and travelling through the mountain landscapes.
The Amazon is generally drier between May and October, although rainfall is still possible. Lower river levels can make some forest trails easier to explore on foot, while wildlife viewing remains rewarding throughout the year.
This time of year gives you plenty of flexibility when thinking about your Peru holiday ideas, especially if you want to combine the ancient sites and mountain landscapes of the Andes with wildlife and rainforest experiences. July and August are the busiest months, so popular sights and accommodation can be in high demand.
It is important to note however, the October is the transitional shoulder season in Peru. It offers manageable crowds, warming coastal weather, and the tail end of the dry season in the Andes.
The Wet Season
November to April
November to April brings more frequent rain to the Andes, but this doesn’t mean a trip to Peru should be ruled out. The mountains become greener, visitor numbers can be lower and showers are often interspersed with periods of clearer weather.
If you want to combine cultural sightseeing with some time on the coast, then these months are generally warmer along the Pacific coast, making it a good time to include Lima, Paracas and the northern beaches in your holiday.
The Andes are less predictable as the rain can make some hiking conditions more challenging.
The Amazon follows its own seasonal pattern. Higher river levels during the wetter months can provide access to flooded areas of forest and smaller waterways that may be harder to reach when water levels are lower.
