Let's plan your perfect tripWeather in South Africa
South Africa has a diverse climate due to its varying landscapes, ranging from Mediterranean conditions in the Cape to subtropical warmth along the east coast and semi-arid desert inland. The country experiences distinct seasons, with a dry winter and a green, rainy summer. Whether you’re going on a Big Five safari, exploring vibrant cities, or enjoying the coastline, understanding South Africa’s weather will help you plan the perfect trip.
The Green Season (November–April): Warm and Lush
South Africa’s summer months bring warm temperatures (25–35°C / 77–95°F) and regular rainfall, especially in the northeastern regions, including Kruger National Park. The landscapes are beautifully green, making it a fantastic time for birdwatching and seeing newborn wildlife. While game viewing can be more challenging due to thicker vegetation, coastal areas like Cape Town and the Garden Route enjoy warm, sunny beach days, with December and January being the peak holiday season.
The Dry Season (May–October): Safari and Adventure Time
Winter in South Africa means dry, cooler weather (10–25°C / 50–77°F), perfect for wildlife safaris in Kruger and Madikwe, where animals gather around waterholes. Cape Town and the Western Cape experience their rainy season during this time, but it’s also when you can see beautiful green vineyards and wildflowers blooming in spring (August–September). From June to November, the southern coastline offers incredible whale-watching opportunities, especially in Hermanus.
