Explore Ecuador, a compact country bursting with life, culture, and untamed wild beauty

From the thick emerald canopy of the Amazon to the cloud-draped highlands of the Andes, Ecuador pulses with raw natural drama. Wake to the calls of howler monkeys in jungle lodges perched above misty rivers, or step into páramo landscapes where wild horses graze below snow-dusted volcanoes. In colourful highland towns, vibrant market days hum with Kichwa traditions and the scent of roasting corn, while deep in the rainforest, shamanic rituals and river journeys reveal an ancient rhythm of life. Ecuador may be small, but it holds an astonishing breadth of biodiversity, culture, and terrain — a concentrated dose of South American soul.

"I’ve canoed the Lower Zambezi, wild camped in the Okavango Delta, and driven from the UK to Cape Town. I love getting under the skin of a place and its landscapes, wildlife, and culture."

We had such a brilliant time. Jo’s advice before we booked made such a difference – especially her suggestion for the small ship, which suited us perfectly. Quito was fascinating to explore with a guide who really knew his stuff, and then every day on the Galápagos cruise felt like a new discovery. It honestly couldn’t have been better planned.

James & Carol Faversham, Ecuador

The whole trip was amazing from start to finish. The Amazon lodge was exactly what we wanted – comfortable but still right in the jungle, with guides who could spot things we’d never have seen on our own. Then heading out to the Galápagos was a complete change of scene but just as special. We really felt the benefit of Sundowner’s local contacts.

Tom Penhaligon, Ecuador

This was the big trip we’d been talking about for years, and it more than lived up to expectations. The balance was spot on – James helped us pace it so we had time in Cusco to acclimatise before the Inca Trail, and then a few gentler days around Lake Titicaca before flying to the Galápagos. Having the right hotels in the right places made such a difference, and the local guides really brought everything to life.

Emily Ashworth, Peru & Galapagos

What an adventure! We’ll never forget the salt flats in Bolivia, staying in a hotel made of salt was such a fun experience, then crossing into Peru for Lake Titicaca and Cusco before ending in the Galápagos. The way the trip was put together worked really well, and we could tell how much thought had gone into every detail.

David & Susan Ormsby, Bolivia & Peru & Galapagos

Combining island hopping with a cruise was Jo’s idea and it turned out perfectly – we got the best of both worlds. The boutique hotels on the islands felt personal and welcoming, and then the cruise gave us the chance to reach some of the more remote spots. Swimming with sea lions was a definite highlight!

The Fenwick Family, Galapagos

Our trip to Chile and Ecuador went really smoothly with flights and transfers all well organised. In Chile we visited the Atacama Desert and the lake district, both very different and memorable. In Ecuador we enjoyed exploring Quito and then spent time in the Galápagos where swimming with sea lions and seeing giant tortoises was a real highlight. We were well looked after throughout and didn’t have to worry about a thing. A fantastic holiday, thank you.

Weather in the Galapagos

The Galápagos Islands have a unique climate influenced by ocean currents, creating two main seasons: the warm, wet season and the cooler, dry season. Thanks to their equatorial location, the islands are a year-round destination for wildlife lovers, snorkelers, and adventure seekers. Whether you’re hoping to see playful sea lions, giant tortoises, or spectacular marine life, understanding the Galápagos weather will help you plan the perfect trip.

The Warm, Wet Season (December–May): Sunny and Tropical
During the warm season, temperatures range from 23–30°C (73–86°F), with occasional tropical showers, usually in the afternoon. The ocean is warmer and calmer, making this the best time for snorkelling and diving, with excellent underwater visibility. Lush vegetation covers the islands, and many species, including sea turtles and land birds, are in their breeding season. This is an ideal time for photography, as blue skies and vibrant landscapes create breathtaking scenery.

The Cool, Dry Season (June–November): Wildlife at Its Best
The dry season is influenced by the Humboldt Current, bringing cooler temperatures (19–26°C / 66–79°F) and rougher seas. While the skies are often overcast, this is the best time for spotting marine wildlife, including penguins, whales, and playful sea lions. The cooler water temperatures attract nutrient-rich currents, drawing an abundance of fish and seabirds. Land animals remain active, and it’s an excellent time for hiking and exploring the volcanic landscapes of the islands. Though the waters can be choppier, wetsuits make snorkelling and diving just as rewarding.
