A group of playful sealions swims around a snorkeler in the waters around the Galapagos islands

Swimming with Sea Lions at Los Tuneles

Slipping into the crystal-clear waters of Los Tuneles, you’re immediately greeted by a curious young sea lion, spiralling through the water like a playful underwater puppy. The visibility stretches endlessly through the submarine lava tunnels, where sunbeams pierce the arches creating ethereal underwater light shows. Turning a corner, you come face-to-face with a resting, white-tipped reef shark, perfectly still in its volcanic cave. Swimming deeper into the maze of lava formations, you watch Pacific green turtles gliding effortlessly past, while schools of yellow-tailed surgeon fish swirl around the coral-encrusted rocks. Overhead, the silhouettes of blue-footed boobies pierce the surface as they plunge-dive for fish, creating streams of bubbles that dance through the water.

Galapagos Giant Tortoise on Santa Cruz Island in Galapagos Islands. Group of many Galapagos tortoises cooling of in water hole. Amazing animals, nature and wildlife photo from Galapagos highlands.

Wandering with Giant Tortoises in Santa Cruz

Stepping through the misty highlands of Santa Cruz, the sound of snapping twigs suddenly draws your attention to a massive dark shape moving through the scalesia forest. There, emerging from the morning fog, a giant tortoise lumbers into view, methodically pulling leaves from low-hanging branches. Standing quietly, you watch these living relics of prehistory going about their daily routines – chomping through the lush vegetation, settling into muddy wallows, and carrying their ancient lineage forward another day.
The soft squelching of feet in the mud alerts you to another tortoise approaching from behind, its weathered shell carrying over two centuries of island history. These unhurried giants move with deliberate purpose, their wise expressions and measured pace offering a masterclass in island time.

A pair of Waved Albatross (Phoebastria irrorata)

Encountering Waved Albatross on Española

Walking along the rugged cliffs of Española, the salty breeze carries you toward one of nature’s most spectacular gatherings. Marine iguanas scatter across your path, their black forms stark against the pale rocks, while Nazca boobies nest mere inches from the trail. Rounding a corner, you enter the domain of the waved albatross – the only place on Earth where these magnificent birds breed.
Standing transfixed, you witness their elaborate courtship dance unfold. Beaks clack together in perfect rhythm, heads sway side to side, and suddenly they pause – frozen in an ancient choreography passed down through countless generations. The rush of air from their 2.5-metre wings brushes your face as they launch themselves from the cliffs, banking gracefully over the volcanic headlands.

Hammerhead shark (Sphyrnidae) swimming in tropical underwaters

Diving with Hammerhead Sharks at Darwin and Wolf

Descending into the deep blue waters off Darwin Island, your heart races as the first distinctive hammerhead shapes emerge from the darkness. The current pushes you along the wall, where dozens become hundreds – a living curtain of sharks materialising in the liquid space. Silver bubbles rise past schools of jacks so dense they block out the sunlight, while eagle rays soar past like underwater stealth bombers. In the blue water season, a darker shadow might catch your eye – the massive form of a whale shark emerging from the deep, its spotted pattern creating a mesmerising display as it glides effortlessly through the shark-filled waters.

Taken from the summit of Bartolome Island, looking out at the rest of the island's volcanic structures, including pinnacle rock, a sharp, tall rock formation that juts out at the islands edge, looking out over the water.

Summiting Bartolomé for Island Views

Climbing the wooden boardwalk to Bartolomé’s summit, each step reveals new vistas of the Galapagos’ most photographed view. The morning sun casts long shadows across the reddish-brown spatter cones, while the iconic spike of Pinnacle Rock rises from the turquoise bay below. Sea lions bark in the distance, their calls carrying on the breeze as you reach the viewpoint platform. Later, snorkelling in the shadow of Pinnacle Rock, a dark shape darts past – a Galapagos penguin on the hunt. Following the underwater lava formations, you might spot a reef shark patrolling the deeper channel or a sea turtle surfacing for air, all while frigatebirds wheel overhead in the equatorial sky.
