Let's plan your perfect tripWeather in Indonesia
Indonesia’s climate is tropical and varies slightly across its vast archipelago of over 17,000 islands. The country experiences two main seasons: the wet (monsoon) season and the dry season. Understanding Indonesia’s weather will help you plan the perfect trip, whether you’re exploring Bali’s beaches, trekking in Java’s volcanoes, or cruising through Komodo’s islands.
The Dry Season (April–October): Ideal for Travel
The dry season is the best time to visit most of Indonesia, with warm, sunny days and low rainfall. Temperatures typically range from 25–32°C (77–90°F). Bali, Lombok, the Gili Islands, and Komodo National Park are at their best for beach activities, diving, and island-hopping. Volcano treks in Java, like Mount Bromo or Ijen Crater, are also more accessible and safer during this period. With peak tourist crowds in July and August, it’s advisable to book accommodations and tours in advance.
Hot Season (May–September at higher altitudes / occasional heat waves)
While Indonesia’s tropical climate is generally warm year-round, some regions, especially lowland areas like Jakarta or Surabaya, can feel hotter and more humid in certain months. This is also the best time to visit higher-altitude destinations, such as the Dieng Plateau in Central Java or the mountains of Bali, where temperatures remain cooler and more pleasant. Wildlife spotting in places like Komodo Island or Sumatra’s national parks is excellent during these months, as animals are easier to see near water sources.
The Wet Season (November–March):
The wet season brings heavy rainfall across much of Indonesia, with temperatures ranging from 24–32°C (75–90°F). The landscape becomes lush and green, making it a beautiful time to visit places like Bali’s rice terraces or the jungles of Sumatra and Borneo. While rain can disrupt travel in some regions, it often comes in short, intense bursts, leaving plenty of time for exploration. This is also a great time to experience local cultural festivals, like Nyepi in Bali or Tabuik in West Sumatra.
