Cambodia has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: the green (wet) season and the dry season. With warm temperatures year-round, Cambodia is an ideal destination whether you’re exploring the ancient temples of Angkor, relaxing on the southern beaches, or discovering the vibrant culture of Phnom Penh. Understanding Cambodia’s weather patterns will help you plan the perfect trip.
The Green Season (May–October): Lush and Serene
The green season brings warm temperatures (24–34°C / 75–93°F) and frequent showers, mostly in the afternoons or evenings. While heavy downpours can occur, especially from July to September, they often pass quickly, leaving behind fresh, vibrant landscapes. This is a fantastic time to visit Angkor Wat, as the temples are surrounded by lush greenery and fewer tourists. The countryside is at its most picturesque, and floating villages on the Tonlé Sap Lake are at their fullest. Though some remote roads can become muddy, this season offers a quieter, more peaceful experience.
The Dry Season (November–April): Peak Travel Time
The dry season is Cambodia’s most popular travel period, with little to no rain and warm temperatures (22–33°C / 72–91°F). This is the best time for exploring temples, visiting national parks, and enjoying the beaches of Koh Rong and Sihanoukville. December to February brings the coolest weather, making it ideal for sightseeing, while March and April are the hottest months, with temperatures sometimes exceeding 35°C (95°F). As this is peak tourist season, it’s advisable to book accommodation and tours in advance.
