Zimbabwe enjoys a subtropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, offering a diverse range of experiences from safaris to cultural explorations. The country’s varied landscape, including savannahs, mountains, and the iconic Victoria Falls, influences its weather. Whether you’re trekking through Hwange National Park, exploring the mighty falls, or enjoying a safari in the Zambezi Valley, understanding Zimbabwe’s weather will help you make the most of your visit.
The Green Season (November–April): Lush and Vibrant
Zimbabwe’s green season brings warm temperatures (25–35°C / 77–95°F) and frequent rainfall, particularly from December to March. The landscape transforms into a lush paradise, and it’s a fantastic time for birdwatching, as migratory species arrive. Though this is not the peak safari season, wildlife can still be found, especially in places like Hwange National Park. The waterfalls are at their most spectacular during the rains, with Victoria Falls in full flow. However, some remote areas may become harder to access due to muddy roads.
The Dry Season (May–October): Prime Safari Time
The dry season is the best time for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around waterholes and rivers, making them easier to spot. Temperatures are mild during the day, ranging from 18–25°C (64–77°F), though nights can be chilly, especially in June and July. This period is also ideal for visiting Victoria Falls, with lower water levels offering better views of the rock formations beneath the falls. From June to September, the weather is perfect for safaris, particularly in Hwange and the Zambezi National Park, where the dry conditions make animal sightings more frequent.
