A popular phrase on the east Africa coast, Pole Pole means “slowly slowly” in Swahili and that’s exactly the pace of life you should expect at this super laid back beach lodge. With only the sound of the waves, beautiful views of Chole Bay and friendly staff looking after you, it’s a tough choice between lazing on your private day-bed, lounging around the pool, grabbing a hammock or stepping into the warm Indian Ocean to explore the incredible marine life of the Mafia Archipelago.

Located in the Zanzibar Archipelago, on the southeast coast of Mafia Island, Pole Pole sits in beautiful tropical gardens with swaying coconut palms, only a few steps from the white sands of Chole Bay, overlooking the Mafia Marine National Park. Blending harmoniously into the natural surroundings the eco lodge is small and intimate with only 7 Bungalows,  a lovely pool area and a relaxing main area with lounge, dining areas and bar, all overlooking the beach with a refreshing ocean breeze. A popular spot is also the small spa gazebo which sits right on the beach and offers very reasonably priced massages with a view of the ocean!

Built in a traditional style with wood & thatch the rustic design of the lodge is infused with some flair by the Italian owner Massimo. The 7 spacious bungalows have beautiful wooden floors, large chunky wooden beds, bright African fabrics and large private verandas complete with comfy Zanzibari day beds. Two of the Bungalows are larger with a second bedroom, making it perfect for families with older children (aged 10 years+).

Although relaxation is key at Pole Pole there is a fantastic selection of excursions to explore the Mafia Archipelago. Traditional dhow boats will take you to some of the smaller islands in the Archipelago, including Juani Island to explore the ancient Arabic ruins of Kua, Kibondo Island with its fascinating fishing villages and the idyllic Bwejuu Island, one of the most beautiful islands in the region.

Considered one of the most interesting marine ecosystems and coral reefs in the world with over 400 species of fish, including excellent opportunities to see whale Sharks, it is no surprise diving & snorkelling in the Mafia Marine National Park is very popular at Pole Pole! Partnering up with Mafia Island Diving, a 5 star PADI dive centre just along the beach, there is an excellent choice of excursions and courses to explore the staggeringly beautiful reefs of the archipelago – David the owner also tends to pop along to the lodge in the evenings to help plan your underwater activities.
