Costa Rica has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons: a wet (green) season and a dry season. The weather varies depending on the region, with coastal areas being warm and humid, while the central highlands enjoy cooler temperatures. Whether you’re exploring the cloud forests, relaxing on the Pacific coast, or spotting wildlife in national parks, understanding Costa Rica’s weather will help you plan your ideal trip.
The Green Season (May–October): Lush and Tropical
The green season, also known as the rainy season, brings warm temperatures (22–32°C / 72–90°F) and frequent afternoon showers, particularly in the Pacific and Caribbean regions. While the rains can be heavy at times, they are often short-lived, leaving plenty of sunshine in between. This is an excellent time for eco-tourism, as the lush vegetation is at its most vibrant and wildlife is abundant. Tourist numbers are lower, meaning fewer crowds, and many hotels offer discounted rates during this period. However, some remote areas may be harder to access due to muddy roads.
The Dry Season (November–April): Perfect for Sun and Sea
The dry season is Costa Rica’s peak travel period, with clear skies, warm temperatures (25–30°C / 77–86°F), and little to no rain. This is the ideal time for visiting the country’s beautiful beaches along both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, as well as for exploring national parks like Manuel Antonio and Tortuguero. The weather is perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking, zip-lining, and wildlife watching, and you’ll find lush green landscapes along with fantastic opportunities for surfing. As this is the busiest time of year, it’s advisable to book accommodations and tours in advance.
