Caitlin – Vang Vieng viewpoint
"For me, nothing compares to those first moments in a new place, fresh off the plane. From wandering lantern-lit streets in Hoi An to watching the sun set on Boracay, that experience often stays with me most."

We have just returned from celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary with a fabulous three-week adventure in Laos and Thailand. This was our fifth holiday with Sundowner Holidays, and once again they provided perfectly located boutique hotels, great excursions, seamless connections, and knowledgeable guides. Our sincere thanks go to the whole team for putting this wonderful itinerary together. We look forward to planning our next trip!

Susan and Colin, Laos and Thailand

Our Laos trip was fantastic! We wandered through Luang Prabang’s temples, cruised the Mekong River, and swam at Kuang Si waterfalls. The hotels were comfortable, the guides friendly and knowledgeable, and everything ran smoothly. A holiday of a lifetime!

Weather in Laos

Laos has a tropical monsoon climate with two main seasons: the wet (green) season and the dry season. With its lush mountains, serene Mekong River, and stunning cultural sites, Laos is a year-round destination. Whether you’re exploring the ancient temples of Luang Prabang, trekking through the northern highlands, or cruising along the Mekong, understanding Laos’ weather will help you plan the perfect trip.

The Green Season (May–October): Lush and Refreshing
The green season brings warm temperatures (25–35°C / 77–95°F) and regular rain showers, particularly from July to September. Rainfall is often brief and occurs in the late afternoons, leaving behind vibrant landscapes and full rivers—ideal for scenic boat trips. This is a fantastic time to visit waterfalls, such as Kuang Si Falls, when they are at their most spectacular. Although some rural roads may become muddy, this season offers a peaceful atmosphere with fewer tourists.

The Dry Season (November–April): Best for Exploring
The dry season is the best time to visit Laos, with cooler temperatures (15–30°C / 59–86°F) and clear blue skies. From November to February, the weather is particularly pleasant, making it the perfect time for outdoor activities like trekking, cycling, and sightseeing. The Mekong River remains a key attraction, with ideal conditions for boat trips between Luang Prabang and the 4,000 Islands. March and April are the hottest months, with temperatures often exceeding 35°C (95°F), but this is also when Laos celebrates the lively Pi Mai (Lao New Year) festival.
