Argentinian Patagonia Highlights
Perito Moreno Glacier
One of Patagonia’s most compelling natural sights, Perito Moreno Glacier is remarkable not only for its scale but for its constant movement. Stretching for five kilometres and rising around 70 metres above Lake Argentino, it is one of the few major glaciers in the world that continues to advance.
From the viewing platforms, visitors often hear the crack of ice before watching huge sections break away and crash into the water below. For those wanting a closer encounter, guided ice walks allow travellers to step onto the glacier itself and explore crevasses and vivid blue ice formations. This is an accessible highlight that works well for most itineraries, particularly when based in El Calafate.
Mount Fitz Roy & El Chaltén
Set beneath the jagged granite peaks of the Andes, El Chaltén is widely regarded as Argentina’s trekking capital. The village sits at the base of Mount Fitz Roy, whose dramatic spires dominate the surrounding landscape.
A network of clearly marked trails leads through valleys, forests and glacial lakes, with options ranging from gentle walks to full day hikes. Even shorter routes deliver impressive scenery, making this area appealing beyond experienced trekkers. Allowing two to three nights gives flexibility to work around weather conditions, which can change quickly in this part of Patagonia.
Ushuaia & Tierra del Fuego National Park
Often described as the end of the world, Ushuaia is the southernmost city on the planet. Surrounded by snow capped mountains and the waters of the Beagle Channel, it offers a very different feel to the rest of Patagonia.
Boat trips through the Beagle Channel regularly encounter sea lions, cormorants and other seabirds, with penguin colonies visible on nearby islands during the summer months. On land, Tierra del Fuego National Park offers a quieter wildlife experience, with birdlife, coastal scenery and forest trails that feel far removed from the rest of the country. Ushuaia also serves as the gateway to Antarctica, making it a natural inclusion for travellers with a strong interest in remote regions and wildlife focused journeys.
Península Valdés
In contrast to Patagonia’s mountains and glaciers, Península Valdés is one of South America’s most significant marine wildlife regions. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it offers exceptional opportunities to see animals in their natural environment.
Seasonality plays a central role here. Southern right whales arrive between June and December, often coming close to shore to breed and calve. Elephant seals gather on the beaches during breeding season, while sea lions and Magellanic penguins are present at different times of year. Orcas are occasionally seen hunting along the coastline, a rare behaviour that draws wildlife enthusiasts from around the world. Beyond the coast, the surrounding steppe is home to guanacos, rheas and foxes, reinforcing the sense of travelling through a genuinely wild environment.
Ruta 40 Road Trip
Running the length of Argentina, Ruta 40 is one of the world’s great road journeys. In Patagonia, it passes through vast steppe landscapes, glacial lakes and remote mountain regions, linking small frontier towns along the spine of the Andes.
Travelling along this route offers a real sense of scale and isolation, with long open stretches broken by dramatic scenery. It works especially well for those who enjoy flexibility and slower travel, focusing on key sections rather than attempting the full length.

The main travel season in Patagonia runs from October to April, with December to February offering the warmest temperatures and the longest daylight hours, though this is also the busiest time to visit. Spring and autumn can be excellent alternatives, with fewer visitors and striking light, but weather conditions are more variable and strong winds are common even during summer months. These conditions are part of what gives the region its dramatic character, but they do require realistic pacing and a flexible approach.
Accommodation in key locations such as El Chaltén and El Calafate is limited and books up well in advance during peak season, making early planning important. Patagonia also works well as a self drive destination for confident drivers, particularly along Ruta 40, while combining driving with guided excursions can add valuable local insight in more remote areas.
